Viruses, Spyware, Malware, Adware – what’s it all about?
Nowadays, everyone knows what an Anti-Virus program is and, of course, that they are designed to stop viruses. For the most part, they do a good job of this. If you were to start surfing the net with no anti-virus installed, it would not be long at all before your computer would be riddled with viruses and virtually unusable.
Traditional viruses, however, only account for about 3% of the infections that internet users suffer. Unfortunately, the anti-virus programs do not protect, for the most part, against the other types of infections that have emerged over the past few years. These are generally referred to as malware, but they incorporate many different types of infections such as Spyware, Adware and many others. So what are they and why and how do we get them?
Spyware is a type of infection that effectively “spies” on what you are doing on the internet. It records the type of things that you look for and sends this information to the author of the Spyware program. They can then use this information to target you with Spam.
Adware is similar to Spyware, but it generally tries to monitor your internet usage and then pop up windows on your screen that offer to sell you a product, or even to remove “infections” from your computer. Often these are bogus and you will pay, but will not receive what you paid for. Occasionally, they are genuine, but they are targeting you in order to get you to purchase their product, which you can probably easily download for free.
Malware is a worse type of infection, which effectively tries to damage files on your computer, spread itself to other computers and overall it just tries to create havoc. It can stop your internet from working (on the infected computer) or even redirect your searches to other pages. These can be the more difficult ones to get rid of.
All of the above infections are normally received via one of two different means. Either you open an email with an infected attachment, or you are a victim of “drive-by downloads”, which are files that download in the background without your knowledge as you are surfing the internet. There is no fool proof protection against these infections, you just have to run some programs regularly to keep your computer clean. You can download various free programs online that can help with this.
So what is Spam? Spam is when people target you via email in order to try and get you to purchase something that they are selling. Spam is unsolicited email, where you have not asked for it to be sent, nor have you given your consent to receive it. Unfortunately, nowadays we all have to suffer with this, utilising any means possible to “automatically” eliminate the unwanted mail.

Welcome to our new look website!
As many of you already know, last year we decided to close our public shop in La Cala de Mijas due to spiraling overheads and a significant drop in sales resulting from the global economic recession.
However… we continue to provide the same high quality services as we have always done since opening in 2000. Although we don’t have a public workshop, we continue to provide our quick-response call-out service, as well as workshop repairs in our new private workshop based locally in La Cala.
We invite you to contact us in the usual ways, by phone on +34-952-494913 or by email on info@computernet.es. We will be very happy to assist you with whatever technical problems you may be experiencing, or even just give you some free advice!
We are now also providing a remote support service whereby we can assist you with computer problems without even having to bring your computer to us. This saves all of us a lot of time and effort, not to mention fuel!
So what are you waiting for?? Give us a call now and let us put a smile on your face!
